Fall 2008 RUSH EVENTS
RUSHING/PLEDGING ALPHA SIGMA Since Alpha Sigma received our charter at St. Francis College, We have inducted three amazing pledge classes into our sorority and are ready for our fourth class - the DELTA's! - to begin the road to sisterhood in the FALL 2008 semester @ SFC. This could be you! Below you will find information about rush, pledging, and Alpha Sigma Sorority. Our goal is to help those interested in the sorority to better understand the process of rushing and pledging Alpha Sigma Sorority. What is Rush? The reason for rush is to be able to meet sisters of different sororities and to get to know them. Why join a sorority? Becoming a member of a sorority can be one of the most rewarding experiences, promoting a feeling of sisterhood that lasts forever. Sisters share a bond, knowing that there will always be a person to turn to in difficult times. Being in a sorority also enhances social skills and builds confidence. Greek Letter Organizations (GLO's) also offer many opportunities for members to hold various positions that enhance leadership skills. Members learn to work well with others, how to run meetings, how to handle problems that may arise, how to keep private matters confidential to protect the well being of others, and how to best handle conflict. What is pledging? Pledging is a voluntary learning experience that teaches responsibility. It strives to show that each individual is essential to the functioning of the group. The pledge class works as a team to accomplish goals and complete the requirements of the new members education program, ultimately showing dedication and devotion to the organization. Through pledging, members learn time management skills, teamwork, and how to accomplish goals. This is why sorority women are very successful in all their endeavors beyond college. Why choose Alpha Sigma Sorority? Alpha Sigma Sorority is an organization that is diverse and multicultural, with sisters of many different characteristics and backgrounds and spanning all races, ethnicities and creeds. The sisters of Alpha Sigma interests including (but certainly not limited to): reading, writing, working out, partying, talking on the phone, studying, drawing, and shopping. There is always another sister with a common interest around somewhere. Even though we are all very different we do all have one thing in common - Alpha Sigma. Together, we strive to keep our sisterhood alive by working together and supporting each other. The reason that we rush girls is so that we can teach them who we are and what we are about so that one day they can be apart of our sisterhood too. Alpha Sigma sisters are known for throwing exciting parties and social fucntions. We usually have parties once or twice during each semester and we attend other Greek events as well. In addition, we have mixers (or get togethers) typically with fraternities but we have been known to have them with another sorority. Mixers and parties are enjoyable because sisters are able to spend time with each other and at the same time they meet new people as well. Alpha Sigma isn't only about partying though. Members enthusiastically raise money and support important philanthropical causes. Alpha Sigma has supported Breast Cancer, RAINN, Domestic Violence, AIDS and MS. We try to come up with as many ways as we can in order to help them. We are looking for women who have the time, strength, generosity, dedication and wisdom to pledge Alpha Sigma and be our future, keeping our sisterhood alive. How do I get to pledge Alpha Sigma? You are able to pledge Alpha Sigma by attending rush functions and by getting to know us. After the rush process, you will be furthered notified about pledging Alpha Sigma. How long is pledging and how much time will it take up? Pledging is as long as you make it. Since it is a learning process and we are not sure how long it will take you to learn everything there is to know about Alpha Sigma, pledging might take awhile. The average pledge period is seven weeks (meaning it can be more or less depending on the pledge class). Don't be discouraged by this - If you know and feel that you have the strength to complete the process then the time will go by quickly! With that said, pledging will take up a lot of time. We strongly recommend that you consider carefully your decision to pledge Alpha Sigma or any other sorority. Make sure that you have the time and dedication that is needed to be a great pledge. We want all our girls to remain active in their other activities, do well in school and keep what is most important first, which is family. Pledging may also require you to travel either by personal or public transportation. If this is something that you feel strongly against, then pledging may not be something for you at this time. What goes on during pledging? I have seen and heard "what really goes on" during pledging from friends, from watching television and from movies. Do those types of things happen and what are you going to do to me? What you are referring to is called hazing. Hazing is illegal, but unfortunately it does happen in other schools within other sororities and fraternities. We can assure you that it DOES NOT happen in Alpha Sigma. We are not going to make you drink toxic substances, hit you with paddles, or make you stand out in the freezing cold completely naked. If we ask you to pledge Alpha Sigma, we feel that you have some kind of potential to one day be a sister. If you are going to be our sister one day, why would we want to hurt you? Like we said before, pledging is a learning process. So during pledging you will be learning about Alpha Sigma - what it is, what it means, and who we are as a whole and individually. Don't believe what you hear on television or from your friends because it isn't always true. Thank you for considering Alpha Sigma as the sorority you may want to rush and pledge. Good luck! |
